Frequently Asked Questions - Community Surf Days

What are Community Surf Days?

Community Surf Days are relaxed, supportive meet-ups for women who already have some surf experience and want to connect, practice, and enjoy the waves together.

Who are these days for?

Women aged 35+ who can already paddle out, catch white-water waves, or ride unbroken waves with some confidence.

Are these suitable for complete beginners?

Not at this stage. You’ll need some basic surf experience. (If you're brand new to surfing, check out our beginner-friendly retreats!)

Are Community Surf Days free?

Yes — these gatherings are completely free. They’re about connection, community, and time in the ocean.

What level of experience is required?

You should be comfortable entering the water on your own, paddling for a wave, and standing up without one-on-one instruction.

Where do Community Surf Days take place?

Usually around the Byron Bay coastline. Exact meeting points are shared the morning of after we do a surf check. We will post the exact location on our Instagram & Facebook stories as well as our private WhatsApp group.

How do I join the private WhatsApp group?

Send us an email with your number and we will add you. hello@seaherrise.com.au

How long does each session run?

We are usually out in the water for about 1.5 hrs then head to a local cafe for a coffee and a chat.

Is coaching provided?

These are not coaching sessions. But we are all about supporting each other out in the water and the more experienced surfers tend to offer tips and guidance when asked.

What do I need to bring?

Your surfboard, wetsuit (if required), swimwear, towel, water, sunscreen, your stoke and anything else you like for the beach.

Do you provide boards or wetsuits?

No — because this is a free community event, you’ll need to bring your own surf gear.

Can I come alone?

Absolutely — many women join solo. It’s a warm, inclusive, easygoing group.

How many women usually attend?

We keep it manageable and connected — generally 8–15 participants depending on conditions.

Do I need to register?

No, but popping us a message to let us know you plan to join helps us manage numbers and share location details.

What happens if the surf conditions aren’t suitable?

We will do an alternative activity like a beach walk, ocean swim and still go for a coffee. If conditions are completely unsuitable then we may need to reschedule.

Do you take photos or videos?

Occasionally we capture moments for the group or social media, but only with your permission. Please let us know before hand if you do not want your photo taken.

What’s the parking situation like?

Varies by location — it is usually paid parking unless you have a Byron Shire permit.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes! definitely.

What age group attends?

These days are designed for women 35 and over, and the atmosphere is fun, warm, and supportive.

What’s the vibe like?

Chilled, supportive, and full of laughter — a chance to surf with like-minded women without pressure.

If I’m not quite confident enough yet, what should I do?

Join one of our upcoming retreats to excel your progress or we can suggest some great surf schools in the area — then come join the community days once you feel comfortable in the water.
