Frequently Asked Questions - General

What is Sea Her Rise?
A women’s surf community and retreat company created to support women, especially those 35+ in learning, progressing, and enjoying surfing in a supportive environment.

Why was Sea Her Rise created?
We saw a lack of focus and support for women in midlife who want to start or grow their surfing journey, and we wanted to change that.

Who runs Sea Her Rise?
Founded and led by women surfers with years of ocean experience, coaching, and community-building.

Is Sea Her Rise only for women 35+?
Our retreats centre women 35 and over, but we occasionally host community days open to all women.

Do I need any surfing experience to join a retreat?
Not at all, most guests are beginners, advanced beginners, and we also cater to intermediates.

What level surfer am I?
Click on the link for a description about the different surfing levels.

Is surfing safe to start in midlife?
Yes! With the right coaching, fitness preparation, and supportive environment, it’s an incredible sport to begin at any age.

I’m nervous about the ocean—can I still join?
Absolutely. Many women come to build ocean confidence, and our coaches specialise in gentle, confidence-first guidance.

What fitness level is needed?
Basic fitness helps, but we include an optional pre-retreat “Surf Ready” program.

Can I bring my own board?
Yes. For our community surf days, you need to bring your own board. Our surf retreats include a wide range soft tops for the lessons but intermediates riding hard boards are encouraged to bring theirs along with them, but if not possible we also have a wide range of hard boards to choose from.

Where are your Australian retreats held?
Mainly in Byron Bay, with seasonal retreats across Australia depending on conditions.

What’s included in a Byron Bay retreat?
Our Byron retreat is all-inclusive! Surf coaching, gear, boards, accommodation, meals, workshops, yoga/mobility, community connection, and one dinner out is all included in the price.

What kind of accommodation can I expect?
Beautiful coastal houses or boutique stays with private and shared room options to fit your budget.

Do I need to bring my own surfboard or wetsuit?
No—quality soft-tops and wetsuits are included. Hardboard riders are encouraged to bring their own board but we also have hard boards to select from.

How many surf sessions will we do?
1 session per day, accept on arrival day.

Are meals provided?
Yes—fresh, nourishing meals cooked by our retreat chef, plus one special dinner out at a top local restaurant.

What airport should I fly into?
Ballina is closest to Byron at about 30 mins away. The Gold Coast airport is about 1 hour away. We can help you arrange transport.

Can I share a room with a friend?
Yes—just let us know at booking.

What is the cancellation policy?
Please see our Terms & Conditions for our full cancellation policy. Travel insurance is recommended.

Can I come alone?
Absolutely—most women attend solo and leave with new friends.

Will you be hosting overseas surf retreats?
Definitely! Keep an eye on our website and socials for upcoming overseas surf retreats.

What are Community Surf Days?
Our Community Surf Days are not surf lessons, they are fun, connection-based gatherings for women to surf, meet others, and build confidence. They are free to join, and we hold them usually once a month. No multi-day commitment required.

Do I need to be experienced to join a Community Surf Day?
Although our Community Surf Days are open to all levels, they are not surf lessons, so they are not suitable for complete beginners. We ask you already have basic surf skills, can control your board in the water and know basic surf etiquette. This is to ensure safety in the water as we can be quite a large group in the line-up.  We can recommend some great surf schools in our area.

What should I bring to a Community Surf Day?
Swimmers, towel, sunscreen, water, your board and your stoke!

How do I find out when the next Community Surf Day is?
Join our mailing list, send us an email and we’ll send you a link to join our WhatsApp group or follow us on social media for updates.

Can I bring a friend?
Definitely! Community Surf Days are all about connection.
